Open Gardens
Sunday, 27 June 2010
GARDENERS and allotment-holders are preparing to open up their gardens and pass on their tips as part of Hebden Bridge Arts Festival.
During the Open Gardens weekend on July 10 and 11 visitors will have access to more than 30 garden and allotment sites in Hebden Bridge, Heptonstall and Mytholmroyd.
Organiser Sue Fenton said: "This event is not about perfectly manicured gardens with interesting botanical specimens, it is about creative and exciting solutions to the challenges of our local geography. The gardens range from two acres on the Heptonstall hillside to a container of vegetables in the library courtyard, from a garden designed for someone with mobility problems to a whimsical garden with a tree house. Some gardeners will offer visitors afternoon tea, others will share their secret slug strategy."
The Open Gardens will have two themes: art in gardens with the opportunity to see the work of local artists in an outdoor setting and edible gardens, in conjunction with the 'How does your garden grow?' competition, which aim to encourage people to grow food in whatever available space they have - whether that is a windowsill or an allotment.
Said Sue: "There are some stunning views from many of the gardens but, given the nature of the territory, most of the gardens are sloping and include steps. Visitors should take care and be aware that Hebden Bridge Arts Festival cannot accept any liability for any loss, damage or injury sustained while visiting the Open Gardens."
The gardens are open on July 10 and 11 from 11am to 5pm. A guide, which gives entry to the gardens, is available from the Festival shop in Albert Street, Hebden Bridge, for £1.

The Alternative Technology Garden,
Hebble End - "Gardening in small spaces
Hebden Bridge is a town of terraced houses with no gardens. Two years of
working with the council have not really identified any suitable places
for growing/allotments. The only alternative is up - vertical gardening.
The ATC's Courtyard Garden has ideas for how to grow in small spaces.
There will be a free leaflet available with information on growing in
small spaces.
