Tin Tab to be demolished for three more houses

Yesterday's meeting of the Calderdale Council Planning Committee approved amended plans and granted conservation-area consent for the three new homes.

Thirty-four letters objecting to the plans were received, and Hebden Royd Town Council also opposed the move.

Nader Fekri (Lib Dem, Calder Valley) spoke to the committe, “The tin tabernacle is unique within Calderdale, it has unique historical and social significance within the borough. The proposal is to knock down a piece of real history, admittedly in need of some tender loving care and attention. At the moment it is home to several businesses and workshops, something in very short supply in the centre of Hebden Bridge.

Unity Street resident, Felicity Potter told councillors, "I have lived in Unity Street for 25 years. We are very proud of the tin tabernacle. It has a really interesting history and is very important to the character of the area."

The Tin Tab applications will go to Calderdale Planning Committee on Tuesday 10 October, 6.30 pm. Those opposing the development are urging as many people as possible to attend this meeting at Halifax Town Hall - which is open to the press and public.

Hebden Royd Town Council have now added their voice to the objections.

Once again, developers have put in a planning application for Unity Street. Objectors have until Thursday 7 September to lodge objections to:

06/01568/CAC - to demolish workshops - Conservation Area Consent.
06/01567/FUL - to construct three houses, following demolition.

Objections should be sent to: The Head of Regeneration and Development, Planning Services, Northgate House, Halifax HX1 1UN. Or email to: town.planning@calderdale.gov.uk.

Deborah Chew, who is handling the application, says that under Calderdale's new delegated powers, it will not go to a Planning Committee if just a couple of objections are received.

That requires more objectors and ideally a request from a ward councillor (received by Friday 8th). She gave the Calder Ward councillors as:

The proposed demolition and new building has not ever been discussed by Calderdale (Nov 2004, Feb 2005, Jan 2006). It is high time it was. Those wanting to preserve the Tin Tab are urging people to email a councillor asking them to request it goes to committee.
