People living in Hebden Bridge are to be asked for their views on proposals to refurbish the town's library.

A consultation day on proposals to refurbish the Hebden Bridge Library will be held at Holme Street Arts Centre on Saturday 2nd July from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Reporters/photographers are cordially invited to attend.

The consultation day will give people the chance to shape proposals for the new library, including the services it provides, its layout, furnishings and colour schemes. All residents are welcome to attend and have their say. The results will help Calderdale Council finalise plans for the refurbishment.

There will be entertainment on the day, including music from Gordon Jackson, and poetry and meditation from Margaret Leighton. Children will be able to take part in drop-in craft sessions. Refreshments will be available throughout the day.

Calderdale Council's Cabinet Member, Community Services, Councillor Amanda Byrne, said it was important that people give their ideas for the library.

"There are enormous benefits for those who get involved in the consultation. The council will work in partnership with local people, giving them the opportunity to genuinely influence the development of the library."

"People may have views on the range and type of services the library offers. They may wish to see a different pattern of opening hours or a wider range of books in their area of interest, or simply want greater provision of easy seating. No ideas have been ruled in or out at this stage and all ideas are welcome."

In December 2004, the Council carried out an extensive postal survey of households in Hebden Bridge to ask their opinion on whether the existing Hebden Bridge Library site should be redeveloped or whether it should be relocated to the Hebden Vale Centre. 87% of households were in favour of developing the existing site.

It is intended that the refurbished library will be on two floors with both a lift and stairs, public toilets, including a disabled toilet. A meeting and performance space is also envisaged.
