How did Hebden Bridge become a Fairtrade Town?
In 2002 a group of local people committed to Fairtrade decided that Hebden Bridge was in a position to try and gain Fairtrade Town status. Meetings were held and the group became known as Hebden Bridge Fairtrade Forum. We started to work on achieving the five criteria set by the Fairtrade Foundation (see page 7).
The council agreed to support the bid for Fairtrade Town status and a number of events were held to promote the campaign. Our local MP has also supported the group's efforts. New groups and businesses have started to use Fairtrade products and we hope that more will be keen to join in now that we are officially a Fairtrade Town!
What else does the Fairtrade Forum do?
We have regular meetings at which all are welcome.
How is information gathered for the directory?
We produced a pledge form which was taken to local businesses and organisations. Those which sell or use Fairtrade products are in the directory. If you use, or would like to use fairtrade products in your business/community group, please contact us for a pledge form.
How can I tell which shops sell Fairtrade products?
Look in the directory for full details. Also look out for the signs in shops and cafés. If a shop/café doesn't sell or serve Fairtrade products you can always ask them why!
What happens now?
The Fairtrade Town initiative is an ongoing project. We need to keep working to increase the availability of fairtrade products in the Hebden Bridge area and ensure that awareness of fairtrade issues is maximised. Please contact us if you wish to help in any way.
