Todmorden – Bramche Square 11-13 September

Halifax – Piece Hall 18-20 September

The Great Green and Ethical Trade Market is coming to Calderdale for two consecutive weekends in September.

Calderdale Council is working with Market Square Group in bringing the Great Green Market to Todmorden and Halifax. These dates will be the beginning of an Autumn/Winter Tour that will end in Oxford in December, taking in York, Canterbury, Exeter and Bath along the way.

David Senior, Markets Operations Manager, Calderdale Council said “We have worked closely in the past with operators to provide Continental Markets at both Todmorden & Piece Hall which has proved successful, This is a new opportunity to provide a unique and different type of market to both venues which will give the public a different shopping experience.”

Paul Kennedy, Director of Market Square Group puts the success of the market down to the universal appeal that it holds; “The Great Green Market actively seeks the participation of local businesses – we recognise that each region has something different to offer and we want this to be reflected in our line of stalls. Yes, we bring our own travelling band with ethically traded goods and homemade foods, but we will be looking to local fair trade steering groups, local producers and Council environment initiatives to make this event of particular relevance to Calderdale.”

To add to the festival atmosphere – there will be live music and craft demonstrations including chain saw wood carving as well as energy saving advice from LILI (Low Impact Living Initiative). Stalls will include crafts from Africa, India, South America, Thailand and Hungary with food ranging from locally produced cheese, fresh farmed venison, organic breads and olives together with both vegetarian and free range meat based takeaway foods.

Councillor Amanda Byrne, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Development; “This will be a great atmospheric event for Calderdale’s local communities as well as traders. It will benefit local businesses both directly and indirectly.”
