Trades Club pledges to Beat the Burglars Tuesday, 11 November 2008 The Trades Club has issued a called for its members and supporters to rally round and beat the burglars after a break in at the club. The raiders broke into the club in the early hours of Monday morning causing some damage and getting away with a small amount of stock but thanks to the efforts of club members they were forced to close for only one night. Now the Trades committee is running Beat The Burglars weekend and is asking all its 1000 plus members to pop in and have a drink to show the thieves won’t win. “It was a massive shock to find someone had smashed their way into the building but luckily they only got away with only a limited amount of stock,” says Trades Club secretary Ern Jones. “But what was really inspiring was the volunteers who came down and worked all day Monday to repair the damage so we could we could reopen our doors the next day. It just proves that community sprit is alive and well in Hebden. “We want to make it clear to the thieves that their actions won’t harm the future of our club which is in good shape despite the credit crunch so we’re asking all our members to pop in for a drink during our Beat the Burglars weekend. “As usual we’ve a selection of guest beers on offer starting from £1.80 and a packed weekend of quality live entertainment including The Travelling Band who opened this year’s Glastonbury Festival as well as some top DJ’s who run the Crabwalking night. “Ironically Cabaret Heaven have Barbara Nice on this Saturday and she was one of the regulars behind the bar in Phoenix Nights. The Phoenix Club is the most famous and unluckiest club in the world so we’re hoping she’ll have some tips about how we can pick up the pieces and move on from this robbery.” Most of the club's security measures defeated the raiders and the committee are relieved they didn’t ransack the kitchen that was due to reopen for business this week. “We’d planned to reopen the kitchen this week anyway so we’re offering selection of meat and veggie curries on Thursday as a way of saying thank you to all the staff and volunteers who have got us back on our feet in record time,” says committee member Janet Oosthuysen. “There’s an open invitation for all our members and the people of Hebden to come down and enjoy a meal that will celebrate our determination to not let criminals destroy a club that continues to be right at the heart of our community.”
