HEBDEN ROYD AT THE MOVIES Added Tuesday, 9 September 2008 Opening a season of the Hebden Bridge Local History Society, Nick Wilding will delve into the cinematic past of Hebden Bridge and the surrounding area. On Wednesday 24th September at 7.30pm Starting with this year 2008 and the films being made here today, he will show extracts of many films shot in this locality. This will culminate in 1920 with a rare look at some of the lyrical images that featured in the extraordinary lost film of Helen Of Four Gates. This has not been seen in Britain 88 years, since Cecil Hepworth, a pioneer of early cinema, filmed it here. The story was based on the novel by local resident Ethel Carnie Holdsworth, who lived at Colden and then Slack during the 1920s, another largely-forgotten but significant figure in the history of working class literature in this country. Many filmmakers have come here to shoot their films. From the ever popular A Boy, A Girl And A Bike to the highly regarded My Summer Of Love, and beyond: Nick Wilding breathes life into the memories of these cinematic highlights. Local People working in the film industry today have also been recorded, talking about their own experiences on some major films of the last two decades. This will be an evening of interesting facts and funny reminiscences, interspersed by trailers and extracts from the films themselves. It is definitely not one to miss!
