US Activist Bruce Gagnon to Visit Hebden Bridge

The newly-formed Calderdale Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament will welcome US author and activist Bruce Gagnon to Hebden Bridge Trades Club on Thursday August 30th from 7.30pm.

Bruce Gagnon is the coordinator of The Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, a global organisation that campaigns for the right to ‘Keep Space for Peace’. A Vietnam-era veteran, Bruce has spoken across the world for the need to work for peace and international cooperation.

Bruce will provide an update on US plans to develop the controversial National Missile Defence programme and discuss the impact of the recent announcement by Des Browne, Defence Secretary that US base Menwith Hill in North Yorkshire will play a crucial role in National Missile Defence, despite previous assurances from the Government that the purpose of the base was entirely separate to National Missile Defence. Combined with the Fylingdales radar station, two bases in Yorkshire are now operating to enable the US to launch an attack on any state, without fear of retaliation.

Calderdale CND organiser Dan Russell said; “US National Missile Defence plans are moving ahead at a dangerous pace and combined with the Parliamentary commitment to the replacement of the British Trident nuclear weapons system it is crucial that we work towards a future of security. We are very excited to be part of Bruce Gagnon’s tour and very much look forward to hearing about how we can help build the international campaign for peace and justice.”
