Activities: Have-a-go archery, 6-a-side cricket tournament, stalls, refreshments.

Hebden Bridge CC beat Sheffield Midwicket Crisis by 16 runs

On a day when rain hit the majority of matches around the area, Hebden Bridge completed their first match of the season on what can best be described as a sticky dog at Salem Fields. In a nailbiting finish they achieved a narrow victory over a scratch side from Sheffield captained by Rick Maynard, recently seen performing at the Trades Club’s Cabaret Heaven

Hebden captain Jeff Anderson opted to bat in testing conditions, and openers Morgan and Howitt made a bright start, each hitting two boundaries in the first two overs. Howitt was soon bowled off his pads by Clare for 8, but Anderson, driving fluently, and Morgan, savage on anything short, took the score well past 50. When Hebdenite Mike Hancock trapped Anderson leg before for 15, it began a spectacular batting collapse as a succession of batsmen struggled to come to terms with the conditions. Medium pacer Lily caused particular problems, taking 3 wickets in 2 overs including the key scalp of George Kidd, courtesy of a fine catch by Hancock. Throughout the batting carnage Morgan remained relatively serene, carrying his bat for a fine 58, with 4 sixes and 5 fours. Hebden failed to see out their allotted 30 overs, mustering just 102.

On a drying pitch, opening bowlers Lawrence Massey, with a miserly off stump line, and Kidd, extracting some impressive bounce, set to work. The visitors lived up to their team name with a calamitous run out in the first over, and after 7 overs the score stood at 16-5, with Massey, who had already taken a fine catch to dismiss Thinn, on a hat-trick. Bill Colman weighed in with the wicket of Robson, but the Sheffield side fought back valiantly with a 6th wicket partnership of 55 between Barr and White. Jules Atkinson eventually bowled White for 15, but it took the reintroduction of Kidd and Massey to make further inroads, the key moment Kidd’s magnificent yorker to bowl Barr for an excellent 34. Even then Maynard threatened to carry Sheffield to victory, but having hit two fine sixes he fell leg before to Howitt, leaving his side just a few blows short. Massey had been outstanding in taking 4-9. Kidd, with 2-13, Colman 1-26, Atkinson 1-24 and Howitt 1-10 were the other Hebden bowlers in a tight match made even more memorable by the spirit showed by both teams to play in such unfavourable conditions.

Hebden Bridge 81 all out lost to Bradford CAMRA 82-1 by 9 wickets

Another fixture, another rainy day for Hebden Bridge as they travelled to Idle, home of the Bradford CAMRA cricket club, and lost their unbeaten record as they went down to a comprehensive 9 wicket loss to the hosts.

Last season’s fixture ended in victory by a solitary run to the CAMRA team, but the scene this time was set early on when Hebden lost a wicket in the second over with no runs on the board. Wickets fell regularly and only Jamie Johnson looked at all settled, dominating the visitors’ scoring and finally finding some support from Chris Hiam. Even so, when Johnson was bowled by Taylor for 31, having hit a six and four 4s, Hebden were still shy of reaching 50. Enter last man Lawrence Massey. Making a mockery of the previous batsmen’s troubles, he smashed his way to 24 with some fierce leg side hitting, and received able support from Kiwi Ken Cameron. Hebden eventually posted an unlikely 81, with the last partnership their best. For CAMRA Appleby and Atkins each took two wickets.

Whilst Massey, Simon Cartlidge and new boy Steve Morgan all bowled tight spells in the CAMRA reply, none could shift the opening pair of Appleby and Fawcett, although several edges flew close to hand. It took the increasingly impressive left arm spin of Jeff Anderson to finally make the breakthrough, with Johnson pouching the catch at short extra cover to dismiss Fawcett for 10. In the meantime Appleby was rapidly advancing to his 50, with nine 4s, and on his retirement, Taylor hit the winning runs. CAMRA had advanced to their victory target with over 10 overs to spare. Anderson was the pick of the bowlers with 1-13.

Bolton by Bowland 229 (29.5 overs), Hebden Bridge 2-0 (1 over)

It was ironic that after a month of near-drought the weather should break during Hebden Bridge’s first match of the season away in the beautiful setting of Bolton by Bowland, with Hebden salvaging an honourable draw after being under the cosh for much of the match.

Skipper Phil Howitt won the toss and inserted the opposition, who were soon away to a brisk start with openers Kelly and Johnson, the latter the son of former Kent opener Graham Johnson. Bolton raced past 50 before Jamie Johnson dismissed Kelly for 32, courtesy of the first of three catches for Chris Hiam. Johnson and Howitt, with further wickets threatened to apply the brakes but batsman Johnson was savage on anything short or legside and reached his century inside 20 overs. He was mercifully run out by keeper Appleby for a magnificent 115 at the start of a fine session of play bowled by Hebden’s two slow left armers, Jules Atkinson and Jeff Anderson. This pair bamboozled Bolton’s lower order, backed up by two stumpings from Appleby, and when Atkinson fired out White for a duck, Hebden had fought back well to restrict Bolton to 229. Anderson took 3-11, Atkinson 3-36, Johnson 2-40 and Howitt 1-54.

Hebden’s fielders had endured rain on their backs for practically the whole Bolton innings, and at the change of innings, Hebden openers Johnson and Anderson faced a single over batting out of puddles, before the game was abandoned.

This match was the first of around a dozen friendly fixtures organised by the club this year.
