Hebden Bridge's Dave Nelson and others join jazz saxophonist Peadar Long for Celestial Echoes

As part of a series of occasional concerts at the Unitarian Church in Todmorden, jazz saxophonist Peadar Long’s ensemble Celestial Echoes is performing this Sunday April 29th. Proceeds from the concert will go to the church which is looking to improve facilities in order to be able to hold yet more events there.

In fact Celestial Echoes is a suite of pieces conceived specifically for performance in sacred spaces and sets out to exploit the natural resonance of such buildings. It has been performed in churches and cathedrals all over the north of England, memorably at Hexham Abbey in Northumberland in front of an audience of 500.

Peadar himself plays flutes, clarinets and whistles as well as saxophone, and the other members of the group are Hebden Bridge pianist Dave Nelson, Jenni Myhill Molloy on double bass and Rod Mason on saxophones and percussion. The music, influenced by folk and classical music as well as jazz, is inspirational and uplifting; its performance is entertaining and delivered with sense of fun. Jazz fans will appreciate it, but the band is always gratified by the frequently overheard “I don’t like jazz, but I love this!”
