Hebden Bridge's £485,000 library refurbishment project, which will provide the town with a state-of-the-art library facility, is under way.

The first stage - moving the library to a temporary home - is scheduled for mid April. The library will close on Thursday, 13th April, and will re-open at the Vale Centre, on Bridge Lanes, on Monday, 24th April.

'We plan to keep the disruption to a minimum'

says Calderdale Council's Cabinet Member, Community Services, Councillor Amanda Byrne.

'All the existing audio-visual and computer facilities will be available, as will the photocopier and fax services. Some books will need to be held at other libraries, but it is our intention to maintain a full range of library services whilst the current building is refurbished.'

The refurbishment works at the Cheetham Street building will start later in the year and follows extensive consultation with local residents. The new library will be on two floors, connected by a lift. There will be a spacious glass lobby, new furnishings and an outdoor courtyard area. Movable shelving on the first floor provides capacity for a sixty-seater meeting area - something Hebden Bridge has lacked up to now.
