Hebden Bridge Picture House are looking to enhance the technology of their 1920's cinema, by introducing a Dolby stereo surround sound system.

A bid has been put in with the UK Film Council for 50% funding, with the other 50% coming from council funds and new advertising strategies.

Acting Picture House Manager Jonny Courtney explains how all audiences will benefit from the new system.

'In today's films, the sound design is as much an art form as the cinematography. This is not just true of the mainstream blockbusters, but also alternative and foreign language films that are so popular here in Hebden Bridge. If the bid is successful, we will be able to improve the quality of the film sound at the Picture House, and continue to show films as the directors intend them to be shown.'

The current sound system at the Picture House has been in place for many years, and although it is capable of providing the sound for modern pictures, the addition of stereo would enhance the audiences' experience immensely.

'Cinema goers expectations have been raised enormously in recent years with the introduction of new technologies and very high quality multiplex cinemas', said Calderdale Council's Cabinet Member, Community Services, Councillor Amanda Byrne.

'Whilst the Picture House tries to maintain a sense of individuality, independence and charm, it must be recognised that the technological infrastructure must be put in place to allow customers to get the most out of their cinema experience.'
