Update: Normal Service Resumed

Calderdale Council and its waste collection contractor SITA UK have now cleared the backlog of household waste.

Crews have spent a number of Saturdays and worked additional hours collecting the waste that had been missed because of the severe weather conditions over the past few weeks.

Collections had to be suspended during the extreme winter weather, because refuse and recycling vehicles were unable to reach many collection points.

Calderdale Council and SITA UK have been working hard since then to catch up on the missed collections.

Councillor Amanda Byrne, portfolio holder for Economy and Environment, said:

“I would like to thank people for their patience. Because of the severe weather many people were left without collections for several weeks.

“We have been pulling out all the stops to clear missed collections as soon as possible and I am pleased to say the crews have now caught back up and normal service has now been resumed.”

Residents should now put out their waste on the normal day as the two weekly collection cycle has been resumed.

Waste collection – Clearing the backlog - latest info from Calderdale

Calderdale Council and its waste collection contractor SITA UK, are pulling out all the stops to clear the backlog of household waste.

Waste and recycling collections were suspended during the extreme winter weather, because refuse and recycling collection vehicles were unable to reach many collection points.

Now Calderdale Council and SITA UK have already started to catch up on collections.

Over the next two weeks, additional vehicles and crews will be working hard to clear the backlog. Crews will be working on Saturdays to make up time, starting on Saturday 23 January, and will temporarily collect recycling in any bag or container.

Residents should place out all materials on their normal collection day. In most cases crews will collect on the normal day but given the backlog, collections may be a day or maximum of two days late. Householders are advised to leave the material out for this period.

All recycling of all types should be put out on the usual recycling days and crews will collect everything presented.

Weather permitting, it is expected that the backlog should be cleared over the course of a two-week collection cycle.

Calderdale Council’s Head of Housing and Environment, Mark Thompson, says: “This has been a very challenging time for all of us. I would like to thank all our residents for their continued patience during the extremely severe weather. Crews are now working flat out to clear the backlog of waste.”

SITA UK’s Operating Officer for Logistics, Dave Foster, says: "Over the past couple of weeks, collections have been difficult and in some cases impossible but our recycling and refuse crews are working extremely hard to collect waste across the borough.

"Our focus will be to clear critical areas like flats but I would ask that residents are patient with us. We will get to you as quickly as we can."

SITA UK and Calderdale Council are working hard to get services running normally again and in the meantime here are a few practical suggestions to residents:

  • Squash all plastic bottles - this will make more space in blue bins and boxes.
  • Ensure all cardboard boxes are flattened - again to give more room
  • Aluminium and tin cans can be squashed to make more space
  • If you have a compost bin at home try to compost as much fruit and vegetable waste as you can.
  • If you are braving the weather to take your glass to one of the local recycling banks please do not put waste or recycling in front of the banks, if they are full call the Council on 0845 245 6000.

Crews will still be exercising caution and travelling only on roads where safe to do so. In the main this means main trunk roads, bus routes, and where possible some side roads.

Recycling crews will remove everything presented, irrelevant of what week it is. Wheeled bin and black sack collection crews will remove everything presented boxed or bagged.

Calderdale Council and its waste collection contractor, Sita, say that household waste collections have been resumed today. Household waste collections in Calderdale have resumed today.

Collections were suspended on Tuesday because of the dangerous weather conditions and crews have been unable to carry out collections safely until today.

Mark Thompson, Calderdale Council’s head of housing and environment, said crews would be starting today on main roads and other roads which are safe to access which had not received collections over the previous four days, including today (week A collections).

“From Monday, January 11, weather permitting, we will be starting the scheduled weekly collection service – week B collections. Additional resources will be deployed throughout all of next week to assist in clearing the backlog from this week’s week A collections.

“We know people are concerned about when their waste will be collected but we would ask residents to be patient.

“Working with Sita we have been doing our best to clear the backlog but the poor weather conditions have hampered some of our efforts.

“In the meantime, we would ask that householders place out their bins, sacks and recyclable materials as normal. We will collect all recycling materials regardless of which week it is. All additional waste will be removed at this time.

“In addition all five household waste recycling sites in Calderdale remain open as usual but please take care as some access roads remain icy.

“I would like to thank people for their patience and understanding and ask that they bear with us.”
