 Callis Community Gardens

The small canalside garden at Callis Mill has recently attracted attention from the planners in Halifax,following a complaint from Erringdon Parish Council. We are putting in an application for the politunnel. Any letters of support from people who know the garden would be appreciated. Please contact me or anyone else on a boat at Callis for a chat/tour etc.

If this is the gardens I'm thinking of, by the canal ... it has charmed me every time I've passed by. More waste ground should be used that way. Better than, either, fly-tipping on it, or spraying it with herbicide though this seems to be Calderdale policy. Good luck to you therefore in saving a fragment of what is fast becoming "ethnic" Hebden Bridge from what we call "developers".

It has been decided to take down the politunnel at Callis after discussion with Halifax planning department. The deal is we take down the politunnel and we don't have to apply for 'change of use ' permission for the garden (£165). I wasn't aware you needed planning permission for growing vegetables (as opposed to docks which grow there naturally)! Vegetable growth is apparently an indicator of residency for which we don't have permission either or want. We are having a garden party on Sat. 23 April 12pm onwards to discuss this and other issues relating to Callis Mill. The idea is to develope the area as a community resource along the lines of a forest garden, an amenity for group activity and low input horticulture. All welcome.

Erringden parish Council should be pleased thst people have made good use of waste land, rather than complaining. I regularly walk from Tod to Hebden along the towpath and have always enjoyed seeeing the community gardens.They are a pleasure to look at.
