The legacy of Acre Mill lives on.... a planning application has gone in for a house to be built on land adjacent to the old Acre Mill asbestos factory in Old Town. The land is what is currently being used as a old vehicle and container store next to 'Automobilia'. Objections have gone in from local residents saying they remember the site being used for asbestos waste tipping before the factory was pulled down in the 1970's. There should be very thorough testing of the site for asbestos before any disturbance of the ground is even considered. Even a small release of asbestos dust from the site if it is present could pose a serious hazard to local residents, and the village school is just yards away.
There is a new group formed by local residents who have concerns about this - so please get in touch if you have any concerns or if you know anyone in the area who might remember asbestos waste tipping in the Old Town area.

The Daily Mirror's Asbestos Timebomb campaign to raise awareness and change the law on asbestos is gathering massive momentum.
There are some heartbreaking stories including stories from Hebden Bridge and Todmorden.
Anyone doubting the danger presented by asbestos should read the Mirror blog and heed the warnings in this thread.
If local residents (and they should know) are saying they remember the site being used for asbestos waste tipping before the factory was pulled down then the land should be thoroughly tested. It's not a lot to ask in view of what went before.

This is a crazy idea. Haven't people got short memories? Disturbing dumped asbestos is like stirring a cancerous hornet's nest.
Leave well alone.
The plans are for a so-called "eco home". This sounds like utter greenwashing - an attempt to make a profit and build in the greenbelt on a very questionable site to make a fast buck?
People are green in Hebden Bridge but not that sort of green!
Too many people have died from asbestos disease in our area.
This application should be binned.
